CURRICULUM
Overview
Marrickville High School offers a wide range of curricular and extra-curricular activities that cater for the full range of students.
We ensure that students first entering high school feel more comfortable with the process by providing a transition program from Year 6 into Year 7 where a range of pre-high school taster activities are offered during Years 5 and 6. Our students lead these activities for the primary school students and when new students first arrive in high school, there are sure to be many familiar faces among the older students.
There is also a welcome BBQ and an induction day at the end of Year 6 so that, once again, students feel more at ease on their first day the following year. They will have experienced sample lessons and met many of the staff.
During the first week of high school, an induction program is run for all Year 7 students. The aim of this program is to familiarise the students with high school routine, to ensure that they can easily find their way aroung the school and to help them get to know their new class mates.
The Peer Support program run in Year 7 builds stronger links between Year 7 and Year 10 students as well as developing leadership skills in Year 9 students.
In Years 7 and 8, all students follow the same curriculum which provides them with a general grounding in all main subject areas. Across the curriculum there is a strong focus for all students on literacy and numeracy and the CARE program aims to build up individual comprehension and reading skills.
In Years 9 and 10, students choose three electives as well as studying the courses that are compulsory for the School Certificate. The electives offered each year depend on student interest. The mandatory subjects for Years 9 and 10 are English, Mathematics, Science, Australian History and Australian Geography, and PDHPE.
The Year 11 and 12 subjects are also offered according to student interest. Students have a choice of choosing subjects which will qualify them for university admission or of following a vocational education path. Extension courses are offered in English, Mathematics and History.
Sport is valued at Marrickville High School and a wide range of opportunities for student participation are offered to students both within school and outside of school.
Student leadership is promoted through a variety of activities including:
- Student Representative Council
- Peer Support leadership program
